5 years on from September 11

Yes. I'm still mad that my friend who was watching it live did not call me up and let me know so that I could watch it.

Law of entropy applied to Evolution - Discuss

Most Science-minded people agree that the second law of thermodynamics is fundamental. However, it has often been postulated that just as in other natural processes things can become "messed up" but there is no natural process where things "become more ordered". At a casual glance, evolutionary theory is saying that natural process of evolution is making things more advanced and "ordered" in a subjective way at least. Clearly, there must be some scientific tool or experiment which can demonstrate this objectively one way or another.

Good memories are almost too much for me

It is hard to underestimate just how much I miss those times when we would just go out and do crazy things. Bringing back old memories is almost more than I can bear. The sense of loss at not doing things completely insane (other than getting married and having children of course)is more than I can bear. I still seek out the occational insanity - Climbing up mount Stuart, up the cliffs in front, accompanied by nine children, through impenetrable scrub, in the *dark*, without any torches, without any mobile phones (walkie-talkie though). These are just occasional blips that take me back to what real adventure is - camping without taking food, moving non-stop for 24 hours, braving rapids with no protection, climbing up unknown cliffs with no ropes etc.

Sand or what?

Perhaps a date to celebrate lends itself here 27th November 1987

While tidying up looking for old stuff came across this itinerary. I still haven't worked out where all the old photos are though.

I Had a friend Once

Who asked me if me or my chemistry inclined friend knew of a heavy gas and a light solid substance existed such that the solid would float in the gas at anything like normal temperature and pressure. My instinct told me something like Uranium Hexafluoride and a light metal like lithium may work (of course, it might explode) at a temperature and pressure higher than room and atmospheric. I also thought some solid like pumice would also work, but may be disqualified due to its high gas content.

Once were warriors...

Once upon a time we argued about anything and everything. When we had no food, we argued about the meaning of life. When our lives seemed in imminent danger, we argued about food. From midnight to dawn we wandered the streets of Amsterdam, hungry, thirsty, weary unto death, debating the great issues of our time up to and beyond the point of physical violence. Are those days over? Yes, alas. Can an equally glorious age of argument yet dawn? Who can say?
